This blog previously reported on the horrific death of a Sarasota mother out for a jog earlier this month. A few weeks later, her family is struggling to cope with this terrible drunk driving accident, but they are also focusing on preventing such tragedies in the future. The woman's sister, sister-in-law and niece have all demanded that the city ban drinking on Siesta Key beaches.

While the woman's family members are still trying to figure out exactly what happened in the accident, it appears that sheriff's deputies told the suspected drunk driver and his two friends to leave the beach, even after the driver told police he had been drinking. Instead of stopping the driver before he got in his vehicle, the deputies seem to have let him go. As family members find out more about the accident, they are also considering filing a lawsuit.

Wrongful death lawsuits provide surviving family members with the opportunity to hold the person who caused a tragic accident responsible for any expenses the family incurred. It is also an extremely difficult lawsuit to file because of the recent accident that took a loved one, but it is important to speak with an attorney early on so he or she can start attending to the legal aspects of the lawsuit, allowing the family time to grieve and mourn.

The woman's sister-in-law and sister have both said that the community should change the drinking laws. They believe stricter regulation of drinking on the beach could have prevented these men from leaving the beach intoxicated. They also hope this tragedy will encourage greater police patrols of the beaches and surrounding roads.

The mother's niece also believes that if police hadn't been so complacent, they may have stopped her aunt's killer before he got behind the wheel of the car.
